Create your own local city maps and laser engrave them on cutting boards, marble tiles, and small tables, or create laser cut versions using paper, wood, and acrylic or hang them as wall art &#8211; the possibilities and combinations of materials are endless!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>City Map Image Capture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Laser Engrave or Cut a City Map<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"uk-list uk-list-decimal\">\n<li>Start off by visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/snazzymaps.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snazzymaps.com<\/a> to create a custom map for laser engraving or cutting. Creating an account is not required, but if you are interested in creating different maps for customers or friends, signing up will give you the ability to save map locations and custom styles for later use, and don\u2019t worry it\u2019s completely free!<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/001-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"301\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Once you\u2019re on the Snazzy Maps website, click on the Build a Map button near the top of the page.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/002-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"63\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Now you\u2019re ready to create a custom map. Begin by clicking on Choose a Snazzy Maps style button under Style.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/003-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"177\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Search field type Epilog and then click the Search button.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/004-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"288\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the \u201cEpilog Laser \u2013 Laser Cut Maps\u201d style in the results section by Clicking on the option, then click on Apply Style at the bottom of the page.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/005-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"232\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/005.1-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"617\" height=\"91\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Now click on the Size &amp; Location option in the Build a Map panel.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/006-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"205\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Size section change the Height option to 100%.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/007-sm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"133\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Center Location section, click the \u201cOr search for a location\u201d button below the latitude and longitude coordinates.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/008-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"606\" height=\"179\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Fill in the city name and press Enter, or select your city from the prefilled drop-down options.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/009-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Zoom Level section set the Zoom to 13, then click Apply Changes. This might need to be adjusted by the overall size of the city you are working with and the crop you would like to achieve. You\u2019ll be able to adjust the Zoom Level later, by using your scroll wheel with the mouse over the map screen.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/010-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"239\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>We won\u2019t be using the Markers section for this map, but we\u2019ll go over a good use for them that you might find useful. Click on the Markers section and give you a brief tour and ideas for how to use it.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/011-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"179\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>The Markers section includes a Name, Location, and Icon style that can be used to add custom locations to your map. We could add markers for a home, favorite restaurants, wedding location, etc. to add an additional level of personalization.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/012-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"605\" height=\"730\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click cancel to back of the Marker section.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/013-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"101\" height=\"61\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Next click the Advanced Settings section.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/014-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"205\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Most of the settings in this section apply to using maps on a website, so you can ignore most of them. Under the Controls section, click on the button next to Hide all controls \u2013 this will make it easier to capture an image of the map. Then click Apply Changes.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/015-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"597\" height=\"262\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/015.1-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"69\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Now click on the Hide Panel button on the right side of the Build a Map panel.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/016-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"494\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>At this point we are ready to capture an image of the map, which we will later bring into CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator and vector trace.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/017-sm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"367\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Open the Windows Snipping Tool app.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/018-sm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"260\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the New option.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/019-sm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"162\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Then click and drag over the top of the map section on the screen to create a Snip capture (screen shot) of the map.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/020-sm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"463\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Next click the Save Snip option (Disk icon) near the top of the screen.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/021-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"521\" height=\"147\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Name the file and select the .PNG option from the Save as type drop-down menu, then click Save. <strong>Note:<\/strong> the .PNG file format will give you the best image, with little compression, for the vector trace in CorelDRAW or Illustrator.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/022-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"419\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>To finalize the map for laser engraving or cutting with your Epilog Laser system, we\u2019ll use Adobe Illustrator to create a quick vector trace of our screen capture image, add a frame, and city name text to the frame.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/sm\/023-sm.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"718\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Vector Trace \u2013 Adobe Illustrator (Windows)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"uk-list uk-list-decimal\">\n<li>With Adobe Illustrator open and a new page created, start by selecting the Place option from the File menu at the top of the page (Ctrl + Shift + P).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/001-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"399\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Using the file browser window, navigate to where you saved the map Snip, click the .PNG file, and then the Place button.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/002-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"435\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click anywhere on the page to Place the artwork.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/003-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"347\" \/><\/li>\n<li>With the artwork still selected, open the Image Trace panel by clicking Window from the menu at the top of the page, then click on Image Trace.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/004-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"610\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Image Trace Panel change the following settings:\n<ol>\n<li>Change Preset to Black and White Logo (this will change to Custom when you start editing the other settings)<\/li>\n<li>Set Threshold to 150<\/li>\n<li>Click on Advanced to open the Advanced options<\/li>\n<li>Set Paths to 100%<\/li>\n<li>Set Corners to 100%<\/li>\n<li>Set Noise to 1 px<\/li>\n<li>And turn on Ignore White<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/005-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"599\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Then click on the Expand button, near the top of the screen in the Control Bar, to finalize the live preview of the Image Trace.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/006-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"49\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Now we\u2019ll create the frame that goes around the map using the Rectangle tool.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/007-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"78\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and draw a rectangle overlapping the city map. Make sure the rectangle is just inside the outer bounds of the map.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/008-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"469\" \/><\/li>\n<li>With the Rectangles still selected, change the Rectangle Fill color to none, and Stroke to black using the Control bar options at the top of the screen.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/009-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"200\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Open the Stroke panel (Ctrl + F10) by selecting Window \/ Stroke from the menu at the top of the screen, then change the line Weight to 0.75 in (or 54 pt), and select Align Stroke to Outside, next to Align Stroke.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/010.1-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"255\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/010.2-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"460\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Now we\u2019ll create a frame for the city text. Select the Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle starting from the inside lower corner of the frame created around the city map. Then move the top of the text frame rectangle to overlap with the bottom of the map frame. This rectangle will become the frame for the city text.<br \/>\nNote: It may help to turn on Smart Guides with Snap to Point set to on for this step to make aligning the rectangles easier.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/011-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"343\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Next we\u2019ll create the city text. Using a typeface with a bold condensed font will work well for this design, so we&#8217;ll be using Helvetica Condensed Black for this example. Start by selecting the text tool, click in the Font Name search box in the Control bar at the top of the screen, and type \u201cHelvetica Condensed Black\u201d, then press Enter. If you do not have Helvetica, Arial or Myriad Pro make good alternatives.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/012-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"137\" \/><\/li>\n<li>With the Type tool still selected, click inside the text frame you created in an earlier step, then type the city name in all caps, and adjust the size so there is approximately .5\u201d to 1\u201d of space between the text and the frame on either side of the text. Then position the text so the top of the text is slightly overlapping the bottom of the map frame.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/013-illustrator.png\" alt=\"city map\" width=\"675\" height=\"322\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Now create a copy of the city text and drag it to the side. We\u2019ll use the copy of the city text to add the comma descender back to the artwork once we Unite the text with the frame in a later step.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/014-illustrator.png\" alt=\"city map\" width=\"675\" height=\"466\" \/><\/li>\n<li>With the text still selected, convert the text to outlines by selecting Type \/ Create Outlines (Ctrl + Shift + O) from the menu at the top of the screen.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/015-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"316\" height=\"410\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Use the Direct Selection Tool to select the text frame and drag the bottom of the frame up to overlap the bottom of the text objects.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/016-illustrator.png\" alt=\"city map\" width=\"675\" height=\"294\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Next, we\u2019re going to outline the frame stroke by selecting both the map frame and text frame lines with the Selection Tool. With the Selection Tool selected, hold Shift key, then click on both of the frames. Now select Object \/ Path \/ Outline Stroke from the menu at the top of the screen to convert the strokes to outlined objects.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/017-illustrator.png\" alt=\"city map\" width=\"551\" height=\"585\" \/><\/li>\n<li>With all the objects for the city map completed, all that is left is to Unite the objects together. Start by using the Selection Tool to select all the city map objects, then open the Pathfinder Panel by going to Window \/ Pathfinder (Ctrl + Shift + F9).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/018-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"139\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the Pathfinder Panel, under Shape Modes click the Unite option to combine all of the vector objects together.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/019-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"141\" \/><\/li>\n<li>As a final detail, we\u2019re going to add back the comma descender, by using the Exclude feature. Start by deleting all characters but the comma from the city text copy you created in the earlier step.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/020-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"261\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Next select the comma and convert the comma to outlines by selecting Type \/ Create Outlines (Ctrl + Shift + O) from the menu at the top of the screen.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/021-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"410\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/021.1-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"244\" height=\"154\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click and hold on the Pen Tool in the Tools panel to reveal the hidden tools options, then select the Delete Anchor Point Tool option.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/022-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"104\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Now click on the top 3 nodes of the comma to delete the top section of the comma, and leave only the comma descender.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/023.1-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"190\" \/><\/li>\n<li>With the Selection Tool, move the comma descender just under the comma attached to the city map frame.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/024-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"567\" height=\"265\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select both the city map artwork and the comma descender, with the Selection Tool, and in the Pathfinder panel, under Shape Modes click the Exclude option to knock out the object from the frame.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/025-illustrator.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"149\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/support.epiloglaser.com\/staging\/assets\/img\/maps\/illustrator\/025.1-illustrator.png\" alt=\"city map\" width=\"343\" height=\"191\" \/><\/li>\n<li>At this point if you\u2019d like to engrave the artwork, you\u2019re finished.
