This article provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the X-axis encoder read head in Epilog Laser engravers, specifically for the Mini 18×12, Mini 24×12, and Helix 24×18 models. The procedure outlined below will guide you through the necessary steps to successfully replace the read head, ensuring that the X-axis system functions properly and the engraver performs optimally.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

You’ll need a few basic tools, including Phillips head screwdrivers, an Allen wrench, and the replacement parts. Be sure to follow the procedure carefully, paying close attention to the placement of the new read head to ensure proper alignment and function.<\/p>\n

Installation<\/h2>\n

  1. Make sure the engraver is shut off. Open the plexi-glass window on the engraver. Pull the X-axis beam to the front of the engraver. The X-axis beam is what the laser head travels left and right on.<\/li>\n
  2. You will need to remove the gray cover that has the Epilog logo written on the X axis I beam. Using a #1 Phillips head screwdriver, loosen (do not remove) the 7 screws, two in the front and 5 on the back. Once the screws are loosened, take the cover off and set it aside.<\/li>\n
  3. Locate the white flex (ribbon) cable that runs the length of the inside of the X-axis beam. Disconnect the cable from the small green circuit board located above the lens head.\n

    <\/i>Note: <\/span><\/strong>Be sure to either wear a ground strap or keep skin contact to the frame for the next step.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

  4. Now you must remove the green circuit board above the lens head. This board is held down by 2 Allen screws going through some aluminum tabs. Use the 3\/32 Allen wrench on these screws to remove them. Take the board out. Take the new read-head board and screw it in, placing it in exactly as the original that you just removed.\n

    <\/i>Note: <\/span><\/strong>It is important that the brown read-head located under the green board is situated over the thin plastic optical strip where it does not touch the strip. In other words, there should be a small space between the thin strip that runs the length of the x-axis beam, left to right, and the brown read-head\u2019s inner walls. If you push the reader toward the front of the machine before tightening down the screws, it will help align the reader correctly.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

  5. Once you have the new read head secured on the green board, plug the flex cable back into the reader, then put the cover back on and secure all the screws down.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\r\n\t\t\t
