X-Axis Motor Replacement on the Epilog Mini
Machine Types: Epilog Mini 18/24
Tools Needed: #2 Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Turn off and unplug the laser engraver.
You will need to remove the left and right sides of the engraver. To do this, you will need to remove the 6 Phillips head screws on each side panel. There are 4 screws on the facing side (Pic 1) and 2 where the side panel curves around and connects on the back of the engraver (Pic 2).
Once both sides of the engraver have been removed, you will need to loosen the Phillips head screw on the slack adjuster. This belt tension cam is located on the left end of the X axis arm and regulates the tension placed on the X axis belt (Pic 3, 4). You will note that there is a spring attached to it.
Once you have loosened this Phillips head screw, you will need to push on the belt tension cam towards the right side of the machine to lessen the tension on the belt (Pic 5). While applying pressure on the belt tension cam, re-tighten the Phillips head screw to retain slack in the X belt (Pic 6).
The X motor is located on the extreme right end of the X axis arm.(Pic 7,8) Note how the X motor is positioned as you will need to install the replacement motor the same way (Pic 9). You will need to disconnect the wiring harness coming from the X motor to the circuit board which is located behind the X motor (Pic 10). To do this, simply apply pressure on the tab of the plug to pull free from the circuit board. Once the harness has been unplugged, make sure the X belt is removed from around the pulley underneath the X motor.
There are only 3 silver colored Phillips head screws securing the X motor at its base (Pic 11). If you were to look directly down at these screws, they would form a triangle. These screws will not come away from the X motor housing itself. Once these 3 screws have been loosened, the X motor can be removed by lifting up on it.
- To install the new X motor, simply reverse steps 6 back down to 1. Remember to loosen the screw in the belt tension cam mentioned in step 4 to properly return the tension to the X axis belt.
