Epilog has incorporated specific safety features into the Model 19000 Laser System in order to meet the requirements of 21 CFR 1040 and the International Standard EN 60825-1. These safety features include:
- A safety enclosure (cabinet), which fully encloses the engraving laser and its beam path in Class 2 mode.
- Dual redundant interlock systems that turn off the engraving laser when any access door (front, back or top) is opened.
- A visible emission indication when the Laser Diode Pointer (Red Dot Pointer) is operating. There is an LED indicator on the machine’s top touch screen panel.
21 CFR 1040 and EN 60825-1 require that certification, identification, and warning labels be placed on laser products. Reproductions of labels on the Epilog Model 19000 Laser System follow, with their locations specified:
The Model 19000 incorporates two safety functions designed in accordance with EN IEC 62061:
- Door interlock (SF-01): a dual-channel interlock that removes laser emission when an access door is opened. Designed to Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2).
- Emergency stop (SF-02): a Stop Category 0 emergency stop. Designed to Safety Integrity Level 1 (SIL 1).
When the door interlock is triggered, the safe state is the laser source de-energised. When the emergency stop is operated, the safe state is power removed from the machine.
The safety functions are validated for use within the machine's rated environmental conditions (see Section 7) and in an industrial electromagnetic environment. Operation outside these conditions is outside the scope of the safety validation.
The safety-related components of the Model 19000 have a useful life of 20 years. No proof test is required for the door interlock (SF-01) within that period. The emergency stop (SF-02) is proof tested by the three-month Safety-Function Check described in Section 6. Safety-related components must be replaced at the end of their useful life.
This equipment is Group 2, Class A industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) equipment as defined in EN 55011.
Group 2 means the equipment intentionally generates and uses radio-frequency energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation for the treatment of material. In the Fusion Ascent this arises from the radio-frequency excitation of the laser source.
Class A means the equipment is suitable for use in all establishments other than domestic premises, and other than those directly connected to a low-voltage supply network that supplies buildings used for domestic purposes.
Caution: This equipment is not intended for use in residential environments and may not provide adequate protection to radio reception in such environments.
