Reducer Pulley Replacement – Legend 36EXT

This article explains how to replace the reducer pulley in the Legend 36EXT

Introduction

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for replacing the Y axis reducer pulley on the Legend 36EXT laser engraver. Proper maintenance and component replacement help ensure optimal performance and prolong the life of your machine. Please follow all steps carefully, and use the recommended tools for safety and accuracy.

Procedure:

  1. Turn Laser Engraver “ON”. Lower the table all the way down by pressing the “FOCUS” button and the down arrow on the display panel.
  2. Turn Laser Engraver “OFF”.
  3. Standing in front of the machine (left is your left hand side, right is your right), remove front and left outer panels using the #1 Phillips screwdriver (8 screws on the front panel, 9 on the left panel).
  4. Locate the black belt on the left front corner. This loops around a large silver pulley and a smaller pulley in a brass block. (See picture)
  5. Loosen the 4 Phillips screws above the 2 springs to loosen the belt. (See picture)
  6. Note: You may need 2 people for this step. Pull up on the brass block as hard as you can, then retighten the 4 Phillips screws.

  7. Remove the belt from the large silver pulley.
  8. Loosen and retighten the 4 Phillips screws around the large pulley while lifting it up to release belt tension. (See picture)
  9. Accessing through the front, locate the shaft in the upper left corner with a retaining ring. (See picture)
  10. Use needle nose pliers to expand and remove the retaining ring.
  11. Slide the large silver pulley out through the left side. Ensure the internal bearing stays in place.
  12. Using a 5/64 Allen wrench, loosen the 2 Allen screws on the large pulley.
  13. Locate the 2 flat spots on the shaft. Align these with the Allen screws you just loosened.
  14. Remove the old shaft and insert the new one, ensuring it is fully seated into the large silver pulley.
  15. Reinsert the large silver pulley and reverse steps 13 through 1. The 2 springs will auto-tension the belt. Retighten all screws.

Note: Ensure the shaft goes through the belt and that the belt is centered on the pulleys.
