Registration Camera
The Registration Camera is a standard feature on the Fusion Pro. By printing registration marks on your
project, the camera system will align your artwork with the cut lines in your project file.
Setting Up the Print File
Start by printing your artwork on acrylic, paper, cardstock, etc. On the printed artwork, include two registration marks that will allow the camera system to detect where on the laser bed your piece is located.
- Each registration mark should be a 1/4” (6.35 mm) black, filled circle.
- The registration marks are vital to your printed artwork and provide a common point of reference between your graphic file, your printed material and the location of your printed material on your laser bed.
- There are no strict rules governing where the registration marks should be placed. It is preferable if they are placed on opposite sides of the graphic image.
- When creating your artwork for printing you should overprint the outside edges of your artwork by approximately .060” (1.5 mm). The overprint area provides extra space to accommodate the cutting width of the laser beam.
Setting Up the File for Vector Cutting
Once we have our print file we need to add outlines to the registration marks and add vector cutting
lines over the print file.
-
Select the Registration Marks (Fiducials): First, select each of the registration marks and give them an outline color. Make sure the registration marks are a different color than the cut lines. In this example we used the color blue.
Note: Make sure you do not print these cutting lines on your printed item. These lines are only used with the laser! - Create your vector lines and give them a separate color to be color mapped. In this example we used green for our cut lines and red for our score lines. If you have different lines you would like to cut with different speeds and/or powers, give each of the lines a different color.
- When you have your vector file prepared, choose File > Print. Print to the Epilog Engraver to open the Laser Dashboard.
- For these steps we turned off the live view to see our graphic better, because the camera is not needed for this part of the process. You may turn off live view by selecting the checkbox next to “Video” on the left side tool bar.
- For Registration Camera jobs you must use Color Mapping. In the Processes Tab, select the process and then click “Split By Color”.
- Enter your laser settings for each process that isn’t the registration mark process.
- Select the color process you have assigned to the registration marks. In this example we are selecting the Blue process.
- Select the Registration icon at the bottom of the process, since this process will be used only to identify which circles are registration marks. It will not be processed as a vector.
- The Dashboard will then prompt you to send the job to the Job Manager to continue. Click “Send to JM” at the bottom of the screen and the Job Manager should open.
Setting Up the Job in the Epilog Job Manager
- Place your item to be cut on the laser’s table.
- Focus the table to your item.
-
In the Epilog Job Manager, open the Jobs Tab and double click on the job you just printed to open the Job Information window.
Note: If you want to toggle between expanding the print preview panel and the live feed panel you may click the “restore preview size” button. - The Job Manager will prompt you to select the registration marks on the video feed as they are highlighted on the print preview panel.
- The Dashboard will then ask you to confirm that the vector overlay closely matches the intended vector cut. Select “Confirm”.
- Hunting Routine: The laser carriage will start moving to find the first registration mark and precisely locate its exact location on the laser bed. The same process is followed to precisely locate the second mark.
- After locating the second mark, the carriage will stop moving while it is directly over the second mark. At this point, the job is sent to the Fusion Pro and the Fusion Pro is ready to start cutting.
- Select the job and press the Go/Stop Button to start the job.
Quick Print a Job
When you are cutting multiple prints, you can quickly move from one piece to the next by using the
Quick Print feature.
- After you have run your first laser cutting, open the door to the laser and place your next item to cut in the same direction and vicinity as the last so the registration marks are within 1.5” (38 mm) of the last position.
- With the door to the laser closed, click on the Quick Print icon in the Job Manager. The camera system will move out to do a quick hunt for the registration marks then start the cutting process.
