Proper file naming isn’t just a good habit—it’s the key to faster workflows, reduced errors, and easier file management.
Naming Your File in Your Design Software
-
When creating a file for the Epilog Laser, clarity is helpful down the line. A well-named file helps you identify your project instantly, even weeks later. It also ensures anyone on your team knows exactly what the file contains without opening it.
-
A good way to start is to name your file in your design software.
-
When you print it to the laser, it will carry this name over to the Laser Dashboard.
This allows you to keep track of the original design file both in the Job Manager and your design library.
-
The first benefit of naming your file is that it will be easily identified at the laser in your job list. The next benefit is future reuse—having a clear name makes it easy to find later.
Organizing Your Files
-
At the top of the Laser Dashboard, you can choose to save your file into a folder of your choice. This could be organized by material, job type, or even customer name.
This can be set in the Laser Dashboard by choosing a folder from the dropdown on the top right side of the screen.
-
You can even use sub-folders to further organize your files.
-
If you need to create a new folder, open the Job Manager, click the folder icon with the plus symbol, and enter your new folder name.
Changing the File Name in the Laser Dashboard
-
You can also rename your file directly in the Laser Dashboard.
-
Use a clear, structured format like: [ProjectName][MaterialType][Thickness]_[ProcessType]
Example: AssetTag_Stainless_.03mm_Engrave
Quick Tips
- Be consistent with your naming format.
- Include key details like material type and process.
- Add version numbers if needed, like v1, v2, etc., to manage revisions.
Organized files lead to smoother projects. Take a few extra seconds to name your file correctly—it pays off in the long run.
